For most of modern history, the pillow has been treated as a piece of furniture rather than a piece of medical equipment. We bought them by the bagful, in supermarkets, in airports, at three in the morning from gas stations. We replaced them when they yellowed and never asked why our shoulders ached.

Last year, a small group of orthopedic researchers in Copenhagen quietly published findings that overturned a half-century of sleep advice. Their conclusion was disarmingly simple: the average adult sleeps in roughly the same posture every night, and the average pillow accommodates almost none of it.

Among the products evaluated in their year-long trial, one kept rising to the top — a pillow with an unusual contour, sold mostly online, designed by a Danish brand most consumers had never heard of: The Sleepr.

Within a week, the testers were sleeping deeper than they had in years. We struggled to find another product that came close.

What followed was a quiet shift. Physiotherapists began recommending it. Chiropractors began stocking it. Long-haul airline crews started carrying it across continents in their cabin bags. The reviews shared a disconcerting consistency.

We assembled a panel of editors and asked them to test the five most talked-about ergonomic pillows on the market. The full results — including pricing, pros and cons, and a head-to-head scorecard — are published below.
